The Solar Water™ Fountain is the first class inspired by the folks at In the Desert Children's Project. It is a playful table top fountain that's easy to make. It is pleasing to the eye and brings a joyful sound to the listener. Adding small clay figures we call the 'critters' are both fun and a delight to create. Be sure to have adult guidance when you do this project.

How to make a Solar WaterTM Fountain
|
Items you'll need: * A plastic, ceramic or terra cotta water-proof container deep enough to hold the pump and rocks. Paint and decorate it any way you like or leave it as is. * Polymer clay ( like Sculpey) that can be baked in the oven to make critters. * Acrylic paints and sealer for critters and container. * River rocks of various colors (rinse off dust particles) * A small aquatic pump * Blue Solar Water™ (click to learn how to make it) |

How to assemble fountain: 1. Gather your container, rocks, pump, critters in one place. 2. Place the pump in the container and adjust according to manufacturers suggestion. 3. Surround entire pump and inside of the container with your rocks. 4. Place Blue Solar Water™ in container to a little bit below the top of rocks. 5. Add critters and plants for fun. 6. With an adult present, plug in your pump and adjust the flow of water to a gentle, pleasing sound. 7. Plants can be added to your fountain. Bamboo pieces can stand directly in the water. 8. The Solar Water™ Fountain has been used as a Science Fair Project. 9. The Solar Water™ Fountain has been used as a Centerpiece for tables and auctioned off as a fund raiser for schools.

How to make critters:
1. Take a small amount of clay and work between fingers and palm.
2. Shape into your favorite critter such as a snake that can be curled up or laid out long.
Make a turtle with a little head and feet, a cute little bunny or colorful coyote.
Use your imagination and have fun.
3. After molding your critter follow the directions on the clay manufacturer's box to bake.
4. When cooled, use your favorite colors to paint your critter. Seal it with an acrylic sealer.
5. Place your critters on a dry spot on the rocks.
How to care for your Fountain:
The water level is best kept just a bit below the rocks so it will not splash over. The pump begins to make another sound when there is not enough water. Check water level daily. You may need to add more Blue Solar Water a couple times a week. Careful attention to location of the Solar Water Fountain is helpful to keeping furniture free of water spots. Follow the cleaning directions from the pump manufacturer. It is best to keep your ‘critters’ up on the rocks and out of the water. Unplug your fountain pump when you will be away from home for several days.

Listen to the Sound:
Great care should be taken to insure that the sound of the water will be in harmony with you, your household and all of life. A gentle flowing of the water on the rocks is maintained by the water level in the container, the adjustment on the pump and the placement of the rocks.
