Felted Bag

Supplies: 2 skeins of Wool
Yarn, Size 15 knitting needles (bamboo), Darning needle, Washing Machine
Flow:
- Purchase yarn. You may
purchase 1 skein of color and one skein in a variegated pattern.
- Select knitting needles. The
bamboo is suggested over the metal. You may find the longer needle easier
to work with.
- Cast on 27 stitches or less
using 2 strands of yarn. Choose the number to cast on that is the best
vibration for you; this represents the width.
- Knit for 27 inches or until you
reach the length you prefer. Cast off.
- Fold the bag in thirds. The
top third represents the portion of the bag that folds over forming a flap.
After folding in thirds, adjust the areas so the flap rests just above the
bottom of the bag. This adjustment allows room for the closure.
- Sew the sides of the bag using
the darning needle.
- Place bag in washing machine as
a half load with hot water and a small amount of detergent. Add a pair of
jeans or towels to assist with agitation.
- Run wash cycle 10-20 minutes
until bag has felted to desired consistency. You should no longer be able
to see the stitch definition.
- Remove and rinse in cold
water. Blot with towels. Shape the bag.
- The bag will measure about 14
inches by 9 inches. Allow bag to dry.
- Attach a fancy button for
closure. Knit or crochet a portion to attach for closing the bag.
- Prepare a piece of material for
a strap by knitting or crochetting a length desired. Or take it to a shoe
shop and have a leather strap sewn on.
