‘Companions on the Road’ is an ongoing column created to help us ‘adults’ remember we are children, too, and want to play.

In the Desert Children’s Project web site offers such a variety of activities and things to do.  We invite you to visit and see what you would like to do.

From Naniloa Smith

“I find it fun to see what my child inside of me wants to play.  The web site helps me select an option.  Sometimes I might be inspired to do something totally new.

While on a recent road trip I found out how fun it can be to make up a story.

Tell a Story

1.  Tell a story that you make up.

Allow your story to open with a line you’ve been inspired to say.

Say it out loud.

Let the story evolve.  You may be surprised at your ideas.

2.  Another way to tell a story when with others is fun, too.

Start your story and then pass it on to someone else.

Let them continue the story.

Maybe they will add a bit and pass it back to you or on to someone else.

You may want to add singing.  Let your self move in the direction you feel adds to your own enjoyment of the story telling.

From Mary Koehler

Sometimes it is the simple things my child loves to do best and it is often something that takes only a few minutes to do.

I had taken a trip back near the area I grew up and remembered how much I loved the rain as a child.

A few weeks after I returned home it started to rain.

Summer Rain

1. Look forward to a warm summer rain shower.

2. When it starts, go out into the rain.

3. Put your hands out and twirl in the rain…..enjoy the feel and smell.

4. You may be inspired to “catch” some rain to enjoy later pouring in your hair after a bath or shower

Reflections from our Readers on the Road

“Thank you Companions on the Road for your inspirations to play.  I went to In the Desert Children's Project web site and found a class about bells and was fascinated.  Recently I joined a bell choir at the senior center and I’m having fun playing bells!  I never really paid too much attention to bells but now I hear them ringing all around.”
